Breast milk meets the full nutritional needs of an infant up to 6 months of age

  • For strictly breastfed infants, vitamin D supplementation should be encouraged
    • Cows milk is fortified with Vit D
      • Does not need vit d supplementation
  • Iron and fluoride after approximately 4 to 6 months of age

After 6 months of age, complementary foods are introduced

  • pureed fruit or adding rice cereal

Early introduction of whole cow's milk before one year of age has been associated with type 1 diabetes mellitus, increased risk for developing cow's milk allergy, constipation, and iron deficiency anemia.

For infants less than 2 years of age, infants are classified as low weight or short stature if they are <2nd percentile for weight or length, respectively
